My name is Maryke Cawood,
I am 34 years old, and today I am celebrating one of the proudest moments of my life receiving my very first children’s book.
This journey began in January, inspired by my own son, who is autistic and nonverbal. Every night, reading bedtime stories to him became such a special part of our routine, but it also opened my eyes to something that stayed on my heart why are there so few children’s books that include children with disabilities? Children with autism and other disabilities are just as important, just as worthy, and just as deserving of seeing themselves represented in stories.
That is where the inspiration for my book was born.I wanted to create a story about an autistic child a book that could gently explain autism to children who may not understand it yet, and help them see that being different is completely normal. I wanted to create something meaningful that encourages understanding, kindness, inclusion, and acceptance from a child’s point of view.
I started writing in January, and by April I began putting all of my ideas together. As a full-time working mom and wife, I never imagined that one day I would hold my own book in my hands. To see this dream become a reality is something I can hardly put into words. It is emotional, exciting, overwhelming, and incredibly rewarding all at once. This book means so much more to me than just words on paper it represents love, purpose, perseverance, and the belief that even the dreams we never thought possible can come true.
I am so proud of what I have achieved, and I am deeply grateful to my husband and my son for their love, support, and encouragement throughout this beautiful journey. Thank you for standing by me, believing in me, and being such an important part of this dream. Today, I celebrate not only the arrival of my first book, but also the beginning of something I once only imagined. And for that, my heart is full.
